The chosen compromise: every free() operation reads one cache line from the slab header at the 64 KB boundary of the released pointer. This incurs approximately 5 nanoseconds when the cache line is cold. In return, free() determines size category, owning thread, and region identity through a single load, eliminating page maps, radix trees, and external metadata structures.
